No it isn’t. It is a notice of what will (may?) be a poker room on the net next month. Brunson makes the same error in his endorsement and it’s not just grammar – “it’s got all the action you want” is just a
puff of promise. The idea that “100 years’ experience” (combined from who knows how many members of the “management team”) running poker games is of any use in the design/maintenance of an online enterprise is absurd. The only things that matter are the software and the safety of the games and one’s money. A trend to using celebrity pokers to promote these enterprises is amusing because Paradise with no famed host dominates the “industry” simply because of its far superior software and interface and apparently an adequate handling of players’ accounts – not to mention very fast response from actual human support personnel. It is at least suspicious to claim that a non-functioning site has “action” before it opens.

Is this hand playable in ANY circumstance? Unless I am in very late position I throw it away. Is this right? If I am late and there is a caller, I throw it away, too.

Depends on game conditions but in any of the cases its playable it’s almost always played with a raise. Axo in the Cut off seat against tight blinds, etc. Axs becomes huge in loose games. I’m somewhat careful about who I call in the blinds with Axo. Against a fairly unimaginative opponent it’s a dominated death trap.

The value of unsupported high cards goes down in loose games with lots of pre-flop callers. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play them, but it’s probably not right to always fold either. You’re in a bit of a bind. With AXs and the ‘wheel’ hands (A2, A3) you might win if you pair up your ace, but you’re really hoping to score the flush or straight, in which case you’d like a big pot for the draws. However, the more people in the hand, the less likely that your pair of aces will hold up if you miss the draw and only get the pair. Even if AA is the winning hand, you often get outkicked. With hands in the A9-A6 range, you have little hope of a straight. You’re really hoping for two pair. Top pair with an over card is not very good (for example, you have A8 and the flop is 853) because someone may have a straight draw and even if they don’t, there are too many big cards that could come down on the turn or river and give someone a bigger pair. So these can be very, very tough hands to play. Therefore I think whether you choose to play them pre-flop should depend at least in part on how good a poker player you are. My own feeling is that inexperienced players should probably fold AXo (where X is 9 or smaller) in most circumstances. AXs is a different matter because of the potential for the flush. In a typically loose low-limit game, I will play any AXs from middle position or later in a pot which is un-raised, and I’ll play it in a raised pot in late position if there are lots of callers. But you have to be disciplined enough to fold if you don’t flop the flush draw, and again, one must beware of AA being a losing hand should you pair up the ace. Of course, if you’re in the blinds, you should play these hands unless there has been a pre-flop raise. If the raiser is in late position with no callers, then it could be an attempt to steal the blinds, and AXo is good enough to call (note that the value of a stiff A goes up considerably in a two- or three-way pot). You don’t want to let an aggressive late-position raiser push you off the blinds when you’re holding a playable hand, otherwise he’ll start doing it all the time. The structure of the game may also affect your decision. For example, you should normally play 4-8 a bit tighter than 1-4-8-8 in mid and late position because in the latter you can often see the flop for a $2 bet, whereas it costs your $4 in the former. There are hands I will play for a $2 bet in 1-4-8-8 that I wouldn’t touch for $4 in most 4-8 games, and some AX hands fall into this group.
